Grampian Police Pipe Band can announce the appointment of their new Leading Drummer. Mr. Nicky Gibson (32) a professional drumming tutor form Aberdeen joins the North of Scotland Champions at the start of their Centenary Year. Nicky, who has considerable experience and knowledge of both the local and national pipe band scene, particularly in relation to drumming and tuition said, "Grampian Police Pipe Band are one of the best bands in the area and I'm really looking forward to the challenge of establishing a new drum corps." Having previously managed a drum corps with Culter & District (Grade 2) Pipe Band, Nicky has more recently played with the Bucksburn & District Pipe Band. He has been joined by his wife Elaine, along with several other local drummers. Nicky continued, "I would still like to hear from experienced side, tenor and bass drummers who may be interested in joining the Band and establishing a successful drum corps". The Band Manager, Chief Inspector Malcolm McMillan described Nicky's appointment as "a significant step forward as we build upon the success of last year." Pipe Major Drew Sinclair has also expressed his delight at Nicky's appointment and together they are preparing for forthcoming local and major competitions. Grampian Police Pipe Band, formed originally as Aberdeen City Police Pipe Band in 1907, has a long and proud tradition of playing at events and competitions throughout the world and has become a particular favourite with the people of the north-east of Scotland. In 1975, regionalisation of the Scottish Police Service resulted in Aberdeen City Police and the Scottish North Eastern Counties Constabulary merging to form Grampian Police. This necessitated a change of name for the band which has since been known by its present title of the 'Grampian Police Pipe Band'. PM Sinclair said, "In Nicky, we have an excellent and experienced young leading drummer who will strengthen the band as we prepare for the forthcoming competition season. Speaking about the year ahead, PM Sinclair said "This is a really important year for the band and we are looking forward to competing as well as celebrating the Centenary Year". Appealing for ex-members to get in touch to celebrate the Centenary Year, Band Manager Chief Inspector Malcolm McMillan said, "We are trying to contact ex members of the Band and I would ask anyone who has previously played with the Band to get in touch with us". Anyone wishing to get in touch with the Band can do so at www.grampianpolicepipeband.com or on 0845 600-5-700. The Band presently comprises of forty playing members, of which eight are serving Police Officers. The remaining members are civilians, drawn from all walks of life. |
