In the Swing of Things

Several of the Band members came together recently to take part in the Pipe Band Golf Challenge, at Alford Golf Club.

Mike Zanre & Alex Simpson, golf winners

The event, which took place on Sunday, April 25th, is held annually and involves members of the Police Band as well as Lonach and Huntly Pipe Bands.

Seven members of the Police Band took part this year in the friendly affair.

After a close fought battle in the team event, Lonach emerged as the victors narrowly beating Grampian Police by half a point.

In the wrestle for the individual prizes, Police Band members Alex Simpson and Mike Zanre finished joint top of the leader board with Alex controversially edging the top spot after claiming a better inward half.

Mike, however, picked up the longest drive on the day and fellow Band member Craig George collected one of the nearest to the pin prizes.

Meanwhile Alex Simpson has been throwing his weight behind another of his favourite pastimes, darts.

Throughout the winter months it was noted that he was regularly missing from Band practices.

Alex Simpson & the trophy haulIn the early part of the nineties Alex had to give up darts, one of his favourite hobbies, due to his Band commitments.  However, since standing down from the role of Pipe Sergeant three years ago, he's been able to rekindle his passion for the sport.

Alex has been playing for the Old Bank Bar B team in Peterculter.

Despite only just missing out on the top spot in the league, by just one defeat, the team completed their season picking up a hat full of trophies at a very successful finals day.

Alex himself won two singles trophies and was part of the teams who won two 4 man team trophies and a 3 man team trophy.

Now that is good darts!!

All in all a very successful first season for the team.
