Opening Success

Pipers from Grampian Police Pipe Band were on fine form as they made a clean sweep at the first indoor competition of the season.

The Quartet competition, the traditional opener of the local Pipe Band calendar, was held at St Machar Academy, Aberdeen on Saturday, February 20th.

The Band entered two quartets in grade 2 and one quartet in grade 1, and players competed against other bands from throughout the North of Scotland.

Pipe Sergeant Colin Walker led both quartets with Pipe Major Drew Sinclair still recovering from a recent bug.

Each quartet was required to play a March, Strathspey and Reel set to adjudicator Pipe Major Davie Clark, and played Lord Alexander Kennedy, Ewe wi the Crooked Horn and The Brown Haired Maid.

The first quartet included pipers Mike Zanre, Duncan Edward and Alasdair Macleod, and was placed first in both grade 2 and grade 1.  The second quartet consisted of pipers Mike Brown, Scott Brown and Cameron Shepherd and were placed a rewarding second in grade 2.

Pipe Sergeant Colin Walker Pipe Sergeant Walker said: “This is only a quartet’s competition but the playing was decent and it’s always good to start with a win.”

Colin added: “A lot of players turned up to support us and hopefully we can build on this and make it a really good season for the Band.”

The Band will next compete at the North of Scotland Mini Bands, on Saturday 20th March 2010, again within St Machar Academy, Aberdeen.
