Grampian Police Pipe Band in the World Championships ArenaGrampian Police Pipe Band has come fifth in its category in the prestige World Championships.

The band turned in a stunning performance and only narrowly missed a podium position at the championships, which attracted pipe bands from all over the world.

They came fifth out of a field of 26 in the Grade 2 section of the competition, held in Glasgow at the weekend.

Band manager Chief Inspector Murray Main said: "We were aiming for a top ten position, so we are delighted."

"The band members practice twice a week and all that work has paid off.

"This is the best result we have achieved for several years and we're delighted with our performance."


And he thanked sponsors Aberdeen-based oil engineering firm Balmoral Group for backing the band.

Chief Inspector Main said: "Without their support, we would not have been able to do what we have done."

The 35-strong band, led by Pipe Major Drew Sinclair and Leading Drummer Nicky Gibson, is made up of police officers and support staff, as well as civilians, who all give up their spare time to practice.Grampian Police Pipe Band Celebrates Trophy at the World Championships

Chief Inspector Main said: "Our pipe band brings together people from all walks of life who work very hard to perform to the best of their ability.

"They are a credit to the north east and the goodwill the band generates for Grampian Police is incalculable."

The Glasgow competition attracted 210 pipe bands from 16 countries, who competed over eight separate grades.

The Grade 2 category was won by Inveraray & District Pipe Band, followed by Ravara Pipe Band and Mauchline & District Caledonian. Fourth place went to Dumfries & Galloway Police.

The Grampian Police Pipe Band will be performing at Mintlaw next Sunday.
