  • 1989 Pipe Sergeant Mike Murray, originally from Finzean, appointed Pipe Major.  It was during PM Murray’s leadership that the band became a serious competing Band. In 1990 the Band failed to qualify for the Grade Three Final at the World Championships. The following season saw them win four out of the five Majors including the World Championship and gain promotion to Grade Two. The next three seasons saw several Major Championship successes, culminating in season 1994 when they won two Major's and were placed second in the World Championship. This resulted in promotion to Grade One.  During PM Murray’s leadership the band travelled extensively to: - Germany (3 times), Norway (twice), Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and finally Jakarta in 1995.  Away from the competition arena he had the pleasure in 1990 to lead the Band when they performed in the presence of the late Queens Mother in the grounds of her private residence at Birkhall on Royal Deeside, to celebrate her 90th birthday.  P/M Murray remained with the band until 1997.
